Local law enforcement and Fire Department save elderly man from house fire


On 08/12/2021 at approximately 19:38 hours, Wagoner County Deputies were dispatched to 27700 Block of East 146th Street South in Coweta in reference to a structure fire with an elderly male possible trapped inside.
Upon arrival Deputies S. Parrish, J. Fierro, and J. Lambert made contact with Coweta Police Sgt. Pickett who advised that there was indeed a disabled male inside of the residence who could not get out.
All Deputies along with Coweta Officers and Coweta Fire attempted to make entry through the side door of the residence where the disabled male later identified as 74-year-old Calvin Herringshaw was believed to be, however the heat from the smoke prevented entry.
Sgt. Pickett advised that he believed that he could hear someone talking through a broken window on the back side of the residence. Deputies Fierro, Parrish and Sgt. Pickett then observed Calvin sitting in a chair facing the wall. Calvin appeared to be awake and breathing however his was not responding to officers. The decision was made to attempt to extract Calvin through the window. A short time later Coweta Fire arrived on scene to make entry inside of the burning house.
Deputy Fierro and Sgt. Pickett then assisted the two Coweta firemen, identified as Captain J. Beller and Firefighter M. Milstead through the window so they could free Calvin. Once removed from the chair Calvin was escorted to the window by Coweta firemen where Deputies Parrish and Lambert along with Coweta Officers Wilkinson and Pickett carried Calvin out and away from the burning residence where he was placed inside of a waiting ambulance. Deputies were then able to assist on extracting the Coweta firemen from the residence and assisted in any way they could on securing the scene.
The cooperation between the Wagoner County Sheriff's Office, Coweta Police Department, and the Coweta Fire Department were phenomenal during this incident. The due to the efforts of Deputy Parrish, Deputy Fierro, Deputy Lambert, Coweta Police Officers, and Coweta Fire Fighters an elderly citizen was saved from a terrible situation.
